Christmas in China

This page collects all my posts about my trip around South China this Christmas. If anyone is planning their own trip to china, I have included links to all the places of interest I talk about.

Prologue

Three hours after leaving Lijiang the bus started it’s ascent; winding up through the craggy mountain pass. The young man in the seat next to me is introducing me to his favourite Chinese rap music which I am nodding along to out of politeness. He is taking the four hour bus journey for work and talking to the one person who isn’t Chinese might be the highlight of his day. He insists on speaking to me in English even though his level is below that of my Chinese.

The steep terraced farms of the Naxi people with their scattered white cottages eventually give way to wide, flat pastures littered with the sturdy cubic houses of the Tibetan people. The plateau is at an altitude of over ten thousand feet. There are also yaks. Lots of yaks. We are approaching the bus’s terminus which is also the end of my fortnight long journey: Shangri-La.
